Talking about our friends – jobs

Introduction

On this page, we are going to put into practice some of the words we have learnt about jobs. We are going to write some sentences about our friends.

Conversation

Read and listen to the following conversation where Emily is telling Catherine about her best friend.

Catherine: Tell me about your best friend.

Emily: Her name is Annie. She is 26 years old and she lives in the south of England with her fiancé and their cat. The cat’s name is Jasper and his fur is black and white. Annie is an aeroplane mechanic and her job is to build aeroplanes in a factory. She is very intelligent and good with her hands. She is tall and slim. She is very elegant. Her hair is short and dark and her eyes are brown.

Analysis

Possessive determiners

We use these words to show possession.

Catherine: Tell me about your best friend.

Emily: Her name is Annie. She is 26 years old and she lives in the south of England with her fiancé and their cat. The cat’s name is Jasper and his fur is black and white. Annie is an aeroplane mechanic and her job is to build aeroplanes. She is very intelligent and good with her hands. She is tall and slim. She is very elegant. Her hair is short and dark and her eyes are brown.

The cat, Jasper, belongs to Annie and her fiancé.

The short, dark hair belongs to Annie.

The brown eyes belong to Annie.

The possessive determiners are used before a noun. In Spanish these are equivalent to ‘mi, mis, tu, tus, su, sus… etc.’.

Talking about professions

Emily: Annie is an aeroplane mechanic and her job is to build aeroplanes.

‘Her job’ means the job that Annie does.

    Writing in longer sentences

    Listen to the following sentences and practise saying them out loud.

    Catherine is a teacher and her job is to teach English in a university.

    Emily is a scientist and her job is to do research in a laboratory.

    David is a doctor and his job is to help people in a doctor’s practice.

    George is a waiter and his job is to serve food in a restaurant.

    John is a cleaner and his job is to clean in an office.

    Natalie is a shop assistant and her job is to sell clothes in a shop.

    Alice is a student. She doesn’t have a job. Her task is to study in a school.

    Do you recognize any of this vocabulary?

    Some words are very similar to the Spanish (university / laboratory) while others (shop) are quite different.

    a laboratory = un laboratorio

    a doctor’s practice = un consultorio

    a restaurant = un restaurant

    an office = una officina

    a shop = una tienda

    a school = una escuela

    Task 2

    Select the correct pronoun (I, you, he, she…) or possessive determiner (my, your, his, her…) from the drop-down boxes to complete the description of Angharad.

        Reflection

        You are beginning to build a vocabulary of words. You might want to write some of the words you find in a notebook. Focus on the words which are most relevant to your life. If you don’t regularly use a word in Spanish, don’t worry about learning its equivalent in English. At this point, it’s best to focus on learning words that you are going to use regularly.
